Pictures are from the test of the 100kw generator at Sharon Community Center. This makes the center 100% useable as a shelter or warming/cooling center.

November 2012
CD has another busy month of activities and events. Work continued on the new 100kw generator, setting it up on a temporary trailer, filling it with fuel, and wiring it up for use at the community center.
This past week a full test powering up the community center was completed with 100% success.
Trials continued on a cell phone repeater system in the EOC, more adjustments and some different antennas will be used so the EOC and surrounding area will have much better coverage.
CD members were put on standby for the Superstorm Sandy late last month. Members were given updates by Director Polimer by email and by radio during the storm. Standby generators at 2 repeater sites were used due to power outages. Some minor issues did occurred and were fixed during the storm by CD members.
CD members were asked to support the town's clerk office by participating in nationwide election. Members prepositioned signage, and equipment on Nov. 5th. Then on election day members provided updated traffic condition on 1630 AM, set up signage for traffic flow and provided lighting for the evening.

SCD members remain busy during the beginning of the fall season. Work continues on building portable stop signs. Members are fabricating the large gas powered pump to be towed using any of our vehicles.
SCD members were asked to participate in the 11th Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 by using the 1630AM to announce of the names that were killed that day.
SCD will be presenting their annual and capital budgets in the coming weeks to the Selectmen.
Members will also participate in annual flu clinics supporting the Department of Health.
Dir. Polimer has been in contact with the Town's Clerk Office, and SCD will participate again in the country wide election this Nov. Communication, traffic support, and information dissemination will be the primary focus for the election.

August 26th, 2012 Update
Summer continues to be busy for SCD members. The department participated in the 11th annual Square Jam, early in the month of August. Members provided lighting during the event and continued lighting the town's square until the equipment was broken down for the night. Also SCD members in conjunction with the town's Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) gave out free water and showed the community the Emergency Trailer that is housed at SCD HQ. The trailer contains equipment for sheltering operations, support for search and rescue operations, dispensing site operations, missing persons searches, town wide events, etc.
SCD members participated in a pump drill last week. Our new high capacity gas powered pump was taken to Lake Massapoag and tested. All members reviewed the pumps operating procedure, and the pump will now be put into service for use.
Work has started in the community center to allow a new mobile generator to power the building if needed for the sheltering operation. Once finished, the mobile generator can be put in place and would make the Community Center an operational shelter for Sharon residents. The electrical work was accomplished by securing funds from the capital outlay process.
SCD members continue working on projects that include, building portable stop signs to be deployed at key intersections if traffic lights are not operable. New high output lights have been tested during the Square Jam operation and work will continue on new uses for these lights. Work has started on providing the public safety complex of SCD and SPD with better cell phone coverage. External and internal antennas, amplifiers have been purchased and will be installed in the coming weeks.

July 2012 Events
SCD has active during the month of July. With the annual July 3rd fireworks on a tuesday this year, CD members prepared equipment the night before at our weekly meeting.
SCD has been providing lighting, logistics, and communications to the annual fireworks for over 30+ years. Each year we have used this exercise as a training to be familar with our equipment when it is needed in an actual deployment or town emergency.
New to this years equipment was our portable electronic sign trailer. This trailer was just completed the previous week. It allows us to use LED message boards to alert the community on special events, road blocks, or any information that needs to be relayed to the public. The trailer has the ability to use 120v equipment and also 12v equipment.
Members used their new department issued radios. These radios use an ID system that all public safety department use for safety purposes. There was a few minor issues with the programming of the radios and that was fixed the next week.
Other equipment used during the drill was: Bucket truck with generator and lights, utility truck with generator and lights, #6 truck for towing and use of the lift gate, 2 cycle portable generator, 4 cycle generator lighting cart, 15kw lighting tower and one personal vehicle.
The next week we took apart one 2 cycle generator that failed during the drill. We found that it had bad gas in the lines and bowl, it was cleaned and fixed, and then put back into service.

SCD have been very busy the past few months, even though we have lacked blog updates. Here is a rundown of recent activities and pictures to follow.
Members are busy building a electronic sign trailer. Production is wrapping up with paint, laying down the roof, and hookup of the electronics. A 12vDC to 120vAC inverter was installed so we have the capability of using either 12v or 120v to run various items including our LED signs.
Purchases and activities in the past few months have included:
restocking our first aid kits
a new computer(replacing a slow, in-house built machine)
new Honda 2000i generator(complementing our existing generator purchased through a Health Dept. grant)
new Icom portable radios for all members(radios ID with other depts. to insure safety of members during events)
a new dedicated MIG welder for aluminum welding
new windows were installed by an outside vendor in our garage(this makes our garage more energy efficient)
compressed air lines were routed to other parts of the EOC including the staff room for use
continued communications with SPD and SFD on current capital projects
vehicles have been run, generators have been tested
Designed and fabricated a new chop saw stand for our metal cutting chop saw Designed and fabricated a plastic bending table Assembled evacuation kits for use in a small sheltering event for town residents end of fiscal year activities have begun
SCD is ready for our annual drill at Sharon's Fourth of July Fireworks

Work continues on building our LED Sign trailer. The trailer is being built using 2x4s and plywood. Also we have manufactured a plastic bending fixture that will allow us to bend plastic sheets. The sheets will provide custom enclosures for the LED sign boards.
Other projects around the garage include, installing a low pressure air line to the front of the garage to allow us to use low pressure painting equipment. LED strobe lights were purchased and now custom holders are being fabricated to allow install them on a traffic barrier.
The fabrication is being done with our tig welder. This is good practice for a very difficult art form of welding.

On Going and Past Activities
We have not done a blog entry since December, but Sharon CD has been busy. Here is a brief summary of some of the past and on going activities.
The capital outlay process for large purchases for the Town departments has gone through its reviews. CD asked for an Emergency Management Kit, funding for a new truck, and some funding for generator improvements to the Community Center and Hixon Farm Community Building.
Dir. Polimer presented these items to the committee. Members Levine, Vogenberg, and B. Polimer, lead the capital committee on their annual department tour. The video is on the Sharon Community TV website for viewing.
Some requests will be funded through other means and others will go through the process and voted on in Town Meeting in May.
Members have been working on reprogramming UHF radios for various Town departments including Fire Department, Recreation Department, Council on Aging, and Department of Public Works. For the DPW, CD members helped install new radios in vehicles that old radios would not work with the new FCC rules.
Projects around the CD HQ are as follows, installing air lines to our staff room, fabricating the LED sign trailer, fabricating a new table for our metal chop saw, fabricating led flasher holders for traffic barrier applications.
We continue to participate in on going meetings of the LEPC, town department heads meetings and weekly meetings with the various public safety officials.
Our monthly RACES radio drill was completed with other local towns and MEMA for the months of January, February. As always we are looking for new members interested in radio communications. Any Ham Radio operators in Sharon or surrounding towns are highly encouraged to help us.
Please stop by any Monday night at 7pm, or email the blog @ polimerbj@gmail.com.
