State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC)

From MEMA's Facebook account:

November 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) located in Framingham. Today, the "bunker" is the headquarters of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) in addition to serving as the SEOC during emergencies and disasters. The building was dedicated on Saturday, November 16, 1963. In addition to the pictures below, for more history on the building, read our story:http://www.mass.gov/eopss/agencies/mema/history-of-the-state-emergency-operations-center.html

Sharon CD members visited the bunker over 20 years ago when MEMA hosted city and towns to display their equipment. Most of our current members attended this event!

Old light tower dismantling

Last week members disassembled our homemade lighting tower. This tower was designed and built in house in the early 1990s. The generator was replaced by a new modern 15kw generator over 10 years ago. The design allowed the tower to put out 6kw worth of light by less than 2 people. The tower served us well, but our new magnum tower has much more capability. It allows the same amount of light to be put out by one person and have extra capacity to power other items. The generator is also very quiet.

We will repurpose the 15kw generator to a roll around generator. Thai will allow us to have 2 -15kw roll around generators. They can be loaded into a truck and be completely portable.

Square Jam 2013

CD members participated in the 19th annual square jam, music and food festival. CD provided lighting for the event with our lighting tower, and provided power for the band. We used our new 100kw generator and large cables to run the power for the band.

Also we provided free water and give aways, from the LEPC trailer. Sharon MRC members ran the table. Thanks to all who helped.

July 3rd exercise

SCD participated in the annual July 3rd fireworks display for the town. As usual SCD provided assistance to town departments in providing perimeter lighting. Extra lighting was added this year to areas that were dark in years past.

Traffic intersections were light for detail officers directing traffic.

Our new SUV and lighting trailer was used for the exercise, and were very successful.

New Magnum Lighting Tower

We received our new tower trailer this week. It was purchased through the capital outlay process.

The trailer gives us 4,000 watts of lights. And also has extra power outlets for other lighting or power.

Fire Department Training Exercise

CD helped the fire department earlier this month during a weeklong drill. CD provided generator power for smoke generators during the drill.

March/April 2013 Updates

CD has been busy the last 2 months. We continue to build traffic horses. We have used most of the pallet of 2x6 to build A frames and different length stretchers.

We received a new vehicle is the past month and have been outfitting the new vehicle. We received from the police department a used 2008 Ford Expedition. This vehicle was previously the shift supervisors car. We had the side and rear of the vehicle re lettered and have been outfitting it for our needs.

We installed our Icom UHF radio, a portable radio charger, seat covers, and will be installing a remote search light to the top of the vehicle. In the rear, the truck has boxes for equipment. We have added basic equipment that we carry on most of our vehicles like hand tools, caution tape, traffic control devices, etc.

Work is finishing up on our homemade trailer for the CAT generator. Left on the project is safety lighting, brake controller and license plate mount.

Hixon Farm Clubhouse Generator completed

In a dual project with SCD and SFD, a generator was installed at the Hixon Farm Clubhouse. This will allow residents of the complex to use the clubhouse as a comfortable heated area if power is lost in the apartment complex.

CAT Generator mounted!

The cat generator was mounted today on our trailer. Thanks to the DPW for their help. The trailer tongue weight was measured with a bathroom scale! See the pics below!!

Town Radio Issues

The past 2 weeks, SCD has helped the Police department with some communications issues. This involved working with SPD, a contracted communications company, the DPW with plowing snow to access repeater sites. The transmission problems did not effect the safety of the public and the communication problems have been resolved.

February Activities

Another busy few weeks at SCD. Work continues on our homemade trailer. Final welding, primer and paint was done this past week. The axles, and tries were installed and is now ready for mounting our Cat generator.

The woodworking shop continues to be busy. A frames have made, and now we are making the middle bars. Using the 2 x 6, we are making 6,8,10 foot cross bars. They are put together the same way we are doing the a frames, with jigs, wood glue, staples, screws and finally the edges are primed.

Jumper cables were made up for the magnum generator. This allows us to power up just about anything using our existing distribution boxes, welding connectors, and twist lock plugs.
